Does your PC reboots and lags while intense tasks or locking up without any warning? Well, this might be the cause of overheating of your CPU. You should check the temperature of your processor so as to keep a record of possible issues.
Sadly, Windows does not offer any option to check the temperature with ease. But there are some methods that would surely help you in checking the temperature. Without wasting much time on long discussion, let us directly jump to these methods.
Check the Temperature of CPU
We have got a lot of methods to help you with this. In case you find the first one difficult go with the second method. Or go through all of them once and choose the easiest that suits you the best.
Method #1 – Using the BIOS
Ever heard about the BIOS? Well, BIOS is that menu that helps you in adjusting the basic settings and customizations of your PC. Majority of the BIOS interface comes with the inbuilt hardware monitor. This allows you to check the temperature of your CPU with ease. To access BIOS follow the steps given below:
- Reboot your PC as you can access BIO only when the computer gets boot up. If you running on Windows 8 or 8.1, navigate to the power menu. And when you click restart, press the Shift key. This will take you the Advanced Startup menu to access the settings of your motherboard.
- Press the BIOS key: While the system gets booted, you need to press the BIOS key. It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Majority of the times the keys are F2, F10, and Del. The exact key will be displayed on boot up at the logo of manufacturer screen.
If you miss the chance of hitting they key at the right time, the system will boot normally. Then you need to restart your system again and repeat the process.
- Find the Hardware Monitor: The hardware monitor depends on the manufacturer as well. Some typical names you may see are Status, H/W Monitor and PC Health, etc.
- Check your CPU Temperature: The limit or range or of the temperature of the CPU varies depending on the process, GPU, etc. used. The normal temperature of your CPU should be below (1670 F) 750C. To get the exact normal temperature of your CPU, have a look at the documentation of your system.
Besides just checking the temperature of your CPU, have a look at other temperatures as well. You will see the list of the temperature of the GPU, motherboard, etc.

Method #2 – Use a Program
- Download a Program: You need to download a third party program to check the temperature of your CPU. We came across a free program known as Open Hardware Monitor. It is an open source program or software that can monitor your CPU temperature, the temperature of other sensors, fan speeds, voltage, clock speed etc.
Majority of the motherboards come with the monitoring programs available on the installation disk. But it is better to get a free program to check the temperature of the CPU etc.

- Run the program: Once you are done with downloading the program, install it. Some of them may try to install bloatware on your system. So, do un-check the unnecessary install boxes in the setup wizard.Once you installed, run the program. Some programs may ask you for special permissions to run the program. So grant them the access and proceed.
Most of the programs that we have mentioned here will display:
- Temperature readouts: CPU temperature, GPU temperature, etc.
- Speed of fans
- Voltage measurement
In this way, you can not only check the temperature of the CPU but you\’ll have the other info as well. Interesting, isn\’t it?
Lower your CPU Temperature with these
If you have configured your laptop or desktop Pc in a proper way, it won\’t heat much. But in case it heats a lot, you should take care of it. If the PC does not remove the hot air efficiently, it might cause issues.
Well, don\’t worry much even if your CPU temperatures are damn too high. There are a lot of ways with which you can lower these temperatures. Let us have a look at the best ways to lower the CPU temperature:
Allow for Air Flow
The best way to remove hot air is to give enough space to the CPU to remove heat. Make sure that there\’s nothing beside the CPU\’s outer body, especially at the back. The holes at the sides should not be covered. Also, the back should be opened completely.
In case your CPU resides inside a table or so, make sure the door is not closed all the time. Open it at times so that the cool air can enter inside the CPU.
Keep the Case Closed
You might have heard that you should keep open the side so that cool air can enter. This maintains the air flow. But at the same time dust and dirt enters through this space. It gets deposited on the fans and other parts. This results in clogging of the blades of fans. The open case can surely provide coolness, but the clogged fans would damage your expensive CPU very badly and quickly.
Clean your Computer Regularly
The fans and other cooling systems are there to keep the CPU cool. As I have mentioned in the last point, dust and dirt can damage the fans. Ultimately it will cause high damage to your CPU components. Mostly the fans need to be cleaned.
You can use a small vacuum cleaner or anything like that to take out the dirt from fans. Usually, the fans are located like this- one with the power supply, one on the top of your CPU and one on each side.
Upgrade the CPU fans
The already installed CPU fan may not work properly. It works just to keep the processor cool enough to work efficiently assuming it to be running at full speed. So get a new larger CPU fan from a trusted brand and install it. This will surely keep the CPU cooler than before.
Install a Case Fan
Installing a case fan attached to the back would be really helpful. But if you install two fans inside the case, it would be excellent. One will flow cool air inside and the other one will flow hot air outside. This is the best possible way to keep your expensive parts safe. In my opinion, case fans are even easier to install. So don\’t wait and get one for yourself now!

Replace the Power Supply
Check whether the fan installed with power supply is working properly. The air that you feel on the back side of the case comes from this fan.
In case the fan is not working, replace the power supply as soon as possible. You need to replace it whole because the power supply fan can\’t be replaced separately.
Install Component Specific Fans
Although the CPU is the biggest heater in your CPU, other components might cause troubles too. High-end graphics processors and memory need to be cooled as well. So get a separate component specific fan for extra cooling. Like for the GPU, get a GPU fan and for the memory get a memory fan.
Install a Water Cooling System
In the high-end PCs, fans would work as much as they can. But the CPU might still produce heat because they aren\’t that helpful. So you need to install a water-cooling system in your case.
Well, water inside a CPU? Isn\’t that strange? But you need not worry about that. The cooling liquid is completely packed that won\’t leak easily. It transfers the cooling liquid through CPU to make it cooler.
